Gauging Golf Course Distances
There are over 9,000 18-hole facilities in the U.S., with an average maximum length of about 6,500 yards. Less than a tenth of one percent tops out in excess of 8,000 yards. For comparison, the average length of a 9-hole course is about 2,900 yards. If the more-than 16,000 U.S. courses in total were straightened out (including the 9-holers), end-to-end from the tips, that would span approximately 260K linear feet, or roughly 50K miles. That’s essentially the equivalent of making two passes around the world.
