How significant was 2020 in regard to play? Consider that despite the loss of 20 million spring rounds due to the coronavirus, it was still two to three times bigger than anything measured over the past 20 years. 1999: Much of the year was characterized by unusually warm temperatures. It was the 22nd driest year among the previous 100 years. 2012: The warmest year in the 1895-2012 period of record and below-average precipitation totals across much of the country. 2020: The average national temperature was among the top six on record, with below average precipitation across the West, Plains and Northeast.
